Hi, I’m Alexander

I’m a freelance writer and editor.

I write for magazines, newspapers and brands. My wide-ranging beat encompasses politics, the environment and culture as well as food, design and travel.

I’ve interviewed many memorable characters — from charismatic politicians to provocative artists. I’ve quizzed Ruby Wax about mindfulness, discussed writing with authors such as Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer and the Booker-winning Alan Hollinghurst, and learnt from adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes about polar adventures.

Having survived a year in London as an assistant to MONOCLE’s editor-in-chief, I later went onto serve the magazine as its Southern Africa correspondent. I’ve had bylines in many other publications including British Airways’s High Life and SAA’s Sawubona, as well as the South African Sunday TimesFinancial Mail and Business Day. I also previously served as editor-at-large and books editor at the latter’s luxury lifestyle supplement, WANTED.

You can read more musings on my Medium profile.

I’m the editor of the recently launched TONGUES, which showcases “conversations with questioners, mavericks and mavens”. TONGUES is an initiative of Voodoo Voodoo, a creative collective which offers art direction, branding, design and editorial expertise to clients.

I edited AERODROME, a literary journal I founded with creative director Djameela Daniels, from 2013 to early 2019. We published over 900 pieces, including book reviews, extracts, interviews and original creative writing.

I also edited and project managed the pilot issue of Rhino Africa Safaris’ travel magazine, Africa Traveller in 2013.

I obtained a degree in creative branding communications, specialising in copywriting, from Vega. I work with brands such as Spier Wine Farm to craft punchy, precise and evocative copy ranging from press releases to blog posts and marketing mailers. Other brands I’ve worked on include The Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Johannesburg and Daffonchio & Associates Architects.

I was a writing coach for the Democratic Alliance’s Young Leadership Programme from 2010 to 2014 and served as poetry convenor of the 2015 Franschhoek Literary Festival.
